SPECIAL DEBATES – OPPOSITION DAY

DÉBATS SPÉCIAUX – JOUR DE L’OPPOSITION

4. Ms. Scott — That, in the opinion of this House, the Ontario Legislature should make it clear that sexual harassment will not be tolerated as it violates our fundamental values and that our culture is at a turning point - by acting now, and supporting this important dialogue, we can catalyze change and build a safer and more equitable workplace environment for current and future generations; and, that a select committee should be established no later than December 4, 2014 to make recommendations on combating sexual harassment in the workplace and protecting victims from further harm; and

That in developing its recommendations, the committee shall focus on the following issues: (1) why people, mainly women, are reluctant to report incidents of harassment in workplaces across Ontario. (2) why victims fear that they will be ostracized, that they will suffer professionally, and most of all, why they fear that they will not be believed; and, (3) preventing the further victimization from occurring after the harassment or assault with the unjust treatment of the victims and a chronic failure to hold perpetrators to account.

As such, this committee will be comprised of two members from each of the recognized parties, and that the committee have the ability to conduct their meetings in camera, to ensure that women feel supported and can maintain anonymity as they share their stories. Furthermore, the committee should hear from experts, then make recommendations regarding the development of best practices to prevent sexual harassment and, when it occurs, to address it in a way which supports and respects the victims; and

That the committee shall have the authority to conduct province wide hearings and undertake research, and generally shall have such powers and duties as are required to develop recommendations on a comprehensive strategy to combat sexual harassment in the work place and protect victims of sexual harassment from further harm; and

That the committee shall present an interim report to the House no later than June 4, 2015, and a final report no later than October 29, 2015.

Mr. Arnott — That, in the opinion of this House, the Minister of Transportation should prioritize the Highway 6 Morriston Bypass project by placing it on the Southern Highways Program, the Ministry's five-year investment plan in highway construction for Southern Ontario; and in the short term, support immediate measures to calm highway traffic though Morriston in the Township of Puslinch. 2. Mr. Arnott — That, in the opinion of this House, the Minister of Transportation should immediately move forward to fulfill the Government's commitment to provide full day, two way GO Transit train service on the Kitchener Line between Waterloo Region and the GTA with stops in Wellington-Halton Hills. 3. Mr. Arnott — That, in the opinion of this House, the Government should develop a strategy to ensure that all Ontarians have access to affordable, reliable, high speed internet; and work collaboratively with the Western Ontario Warden's Caucus and the Federal Government to achieve this goal through the development of public/private partnerships. Mr. Clark — That, in the opinion of this House, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care should immediately consider all options to remove the cost of mandatory water testing from non-profit organizations that operate Small Drinking Water Systems; and further that these options include having tests conducted at no charge by local public health units, as is now the case for rural homeowners. Mr. Clark — That, in the opinion of this House, to express the gratitude all Ontarians feel, the Lieutenant Governor's Military Service Pin should be established to recognize the sacrifices of Ontarians who have served, or are serving, in Canada's armed forces with valour and distinction in conflicts around the world to uphold the values of liberty, justice and peace that we all hold dear; and that the pin should be designed to be worn on civilian clothing in order that those who have served may be recognized when they are not in uniform.
