JUSTICE POLICY
COMITÉ PERMANENT
DE LA JUSTICE
Thursday 9 August 2018 Jeudi 9 août 2018
The committee met at 0902 in committee room 1.
Election of Chair
The Clerk of the Committee (Ms. Jocelyn McCauley): Good morning, everyone. It is my duty to call upon you to elect a Chair. Are there any nominations?
Ms. Jill Dunlop: I nominate Parm Gill for Chair.
The Clerk of the Committee (Ms. Jocelyn McCauley): Mr. Gill, do you accept the nomination?
Mr. Parm Gill: Yes, very humbly. Thank you.
The Clerk of the Committee (Ms. Jocelyn McCauley): Are there any further nominations?
Mr. Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria: Yes, I move that Aris Babikian be appointed as Vice-Chair of the committee.
The Clerk of the Committee (Ms. Jocelyn McCauley): We’ll move on to the election of the Vice-Chair in just a moment. We’ll just finish the election of Chair.
Mr. Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria: Okay, my apologies.
The Clerk of the Committee (Ms. Jocelyn McCauley): Not a problem.
There being no further nominations, I declare the nominations closed and Mr. Gill elected as Chair of the committee.
The Chair (Mr. Parm Gill): Good morning, everyone. First of all, let me just thank each and every one of you for putting your trust in me. I’m looking forward to serving as your committee Chair.
Election of Vice-Chair
The Chair (Mr. Parm Gill): In my role, it is my duty to entertain now a motion for Vice-Chair. Are there any motions for Vice-Chair?
Mr. Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria: Yes, I move that Aris Babikian be appointed as Vice-Chair of the committee.
The Chair (Mr. Parm Gill): A motion has been moved by Mr. Sarkaria. Is there any debate? Are the members ready to vote? Good. Shall the motion carry? All those in favour, raise their hand—if you want to do this thing officially. That’s good, perfect. And are there any that are opposed? Perfect. The motion is carried.
Appointment of subcommittee
The Chair (Mr. Parm Gill): I will now entertain a motion for appointment of a subcommittee on committee business.
Mr. Roman Baber: I move that a subcommittee on committee business be appointed to meet from time to time at the call of the Chair, or at the request of any member thereof, to consider and report to the committee on the business of the committee;
That the presence of all members of the subcommittee is necessary to constitute a meeting; and
That the subcommittee be composed of the following members: the Chair as Chair, Miss Taylor and Ms. Park; and that substitution be permitted on the subcommittee.
The Chair (Mr. Parm Gill): Perfect. Mr. Baber has moved a subcommittee motion. Any discussion? Any comments? Okay, if none, I will now put the question. Shall the motion carry? Carried.
Miss Monique Taylor: Can I just ask for clarification: it was myself and who?
The Clerk of the Committee (Ms. Jocelyn McCauley): Ms. Park.
Miss Monique Taylor: Ms. Park. Okay—Lindsey. So just two of us on subcommittee, that’s it?
The Clerk of the Committee (Ms. Jocelyn McCauley): And the Chair.
Miss Monique Taylor: Thank you.
The Chair (Mr. Parm Gill): We will now go into closed session for a briefing by the committee Clerk and research officer on the Standing Committee on Justice Policy.
The committee continued in closed session at 0908.
