EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill enacts the Reducing Waste One Pod at a Time Act, 2017, which prohibits persons from selling or offering for sale at retail single-use beverage pods unless they are fully compostable. The Act comes into force four years after it receives Royal Assent.

An Act respecting the sale of single-use beverage pods
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
Definition
1 In this Act,
"single-use beverage pod" means a container used in a coffee maker to prepare a single serving of coffee or other beverage.
Prohibition
2 (1) No person shall sell or offer for sale at retail a single-use beverage pod unless it is fully compostable.
Prescribed requirements
(2) A single-use beverage pod is fully compostable if it satisfies the prescribed requirements.
Offence
3 A person who contravenes section 2 is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable to a fine of not more than $5,000.
Regulations
4 The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make regulations prescribing requirements for the purposes of subsection 2 (2).
Commencement
5 This Act comes into force on the fourth anniversary of the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
6 The short title of this Act is the Reducing Waste One Pod at a Time Act, 2017.
