Cathryn Motherwell Appointed Ontario Integrity Commissioner
TORONTO, April 16, 2025 - The Legislative Assembly of Ontario has appointed Cathryn Motherwell as the province’s next Integrity Commissioner. Effective today, she begins her five-year term in this role.
Ms. Motherwell has served in several positions at the Office of the Integrity Commissioner and has been Deputy Commissioner for the past six years.
“I am honoured to be taking on this role,” she states. “I have a deep appreciation for the principles of government ethics and the work we have done to establish the office as a centre of excellence in this field. I look forward to working closely with elected officials and public servants as the province’s Integrity Commissioner.”
The Integrity Commissioner is an Officer of the Ontario Legislative Assembly and is independent of government. The Office of the Integrity Commissioner of Ontario was established in 1988 to encourage high standards of ethical conduct for Members of Provincial Parliament. It works to encourage and support high ethical standards that strengthen trust and confidence in and within the Ontario government.
It administers seven mandates, including: Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Integrity, Ministers’ Staff Ethical Conduct, Public Sector Ethics, Lobbyist Registration, Disclosure of Wrongdoing, and Expenses Review for two separate groups of public servants including MPPs and appointees and certain employees from selected provincial agencies, boards and commissions.
A biographical note follows:
Ms. Motherwell, a former journalist, has been with the Office of the Integrity Commissioner since 2009. Her leadership and dedication have been instrumental in shaping the office’s work across its seven mandates.
Ms. Motherwell has represented Ontario in government ethics, lobbyist registration and disclosure of wrongdoing meetings with other jurisdictions across Canada. She is a regular speaker and panelist at the Council on Governmental Ethics Laws and currently serves as its conference program co-chair. She lives in Toronto with her husband and daughter.
