Bill 153 2009
An Act to proclaim Greenbelt Day
Preamble
The year 2009 marks the fourth anniversary of the establishment of Ontario's Greenbelt. The Greenbelt protects 1.8 million acres in the Golden Horseshoe area, preserving crucial farmland, providing for tourism, recreation and health benefits and supporting local green economies that benefit the environment.
The Greenbelt has been praised worldwide as a forward thinking initiative that protects in perpetuity green space around Canada's largest urban centre. It is estimated that the Greenbelt is valued at $2.6 billion in ecological services and benefits.
Leading environmental organizations have lauded the establishment of the Greenbelt for the economic benefit and ecological protection it provides.
Proclaiming February 28 in each year as Greenbelt Day provides Ontarians with an opportunity to celebrate this milestone.
