An Act to amend the
Building Code Act, 1992
respecting home fire sprinklers

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
1. The Building Code Act, 1992 is amended by adding the following section:
Sprinkler system required
8.1 (1) No person shall construct any building that is to be used, in whole or in part, as residential premises, including an apartment building, a detached house, a semi-detached house, a row house or any other similar building, unless it is equipped with a fire sprinkler system that conforms with the regulations.
Application of subs. (1)
(2) The requirement for a fire sprinkler system set out in subsection (1) applies with respect to all buildings on which construction begins on or after the day this Act comes into force.
Commencement
2. This Act comes into force on a day to be named by proclamation of the Lieutenant Governor.
Short title
3. The short title of this Act is the Home Fire Sprinkler Act, 2005.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
The purpose of the Bill is to require that fire sprinkler systems be incorporated into the construction of new buildings to be used for housing, such as apartment buildings and detached, semi-detached and row houses.
