An Act respecting
the improvement of Highway 17,
part of the TransCanada Highway
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
Plan for improving Highway 17
1. (1) For the purposes of regional economic enhancement and public safety, the Minister of Transportation and the Minister of Public Infrastructure and Renewal shall work together with the federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities to ensure the development of a comprehensive plan for improving that part of the TransCanada Highway known as Highway 17.
Content of plan
(2) The plan shall include specific proposals relating to passing lanes, paved shoulders, rumble strips, rest stops and widening to four lanes.
Implementation of plan
(3) Implementation of the plan shall begin within five years of its adoption on condition that the cost-sharing agreement referred to in subsection (4) has been entered into.
Cost-sharing agreement
(4) The Government of Ontario shall enter into discussions with the Government of Canada for the purpose of reaching an agreement relating to sharing the costs of implementing the plan.
Commencement
2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3. The short title of this Act is the TransCanada Highway Improvement Act (Highway 17), 2006.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill proposes federal-provincial discussions for the development of a plan for the improvement of the Highway 17 portion of the TransCanada Highway to enhance the regional economy and public safety. Such a plan shall address the matters of passing lanes, paved shoulders, rumble strips, rest stops and widening to four lanes. Implementation of the plan is conditional on a cost-sharing agreement being entered into between the Ontario Government and the Government of Canada.
