An Act to require
that flags be flown at half-mast
at provincial government buildings
to honour Ontario police officers,
correctional services officers, firefighters
and ambulance workers who
lose their lives in the line of duty
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
Definitions
1. In this Act,
"ambulance worker" means a paramedic, emergency medical attendant or other health care provider who is employed by or is a volunteer in an ambulance service or attends on a call for an ambulance; ("préposé aux services d'ambulance")
"period of mourning" means the day of the announcement of a death and the full day following; ("période de deuil")
"provincial government buildings" means provincial correctional facilities, police stations, elementary, secondary and private schools, public hospitals, buildings occupied exclusively by employees of the Government of Ontario, and the Legislative Building. ("édifices du gouvernement provincial")
Flags at half-mast
2. Flags flown at provincial government buildings shall be flown at half-mast for a period of mourning to honour every Ontario police officer, correctional services officer, firefighter and ambulance worker who loses his or her life in the line of duty.
Commencement
3. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
4. The short title of this Act is the Flags at Half-Mast Act, 2002.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
The purpose of the Bill is to require that flags at provincial government buildings be flown at half-mast for a period of mourning to honour police officers, correctional services officers, firefighters and ambulance workers in Ontario who lose their lives in the line of duty.
