An Act to restore
goodwill and positive
learning conditions in
Ontario's schools
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
1. Subsection 170.2.1 (2) of the Education Act, as enacted by the Statutes of Ontario, 2000, chapter 11, section 6, is repealed and the following substituted:
Minimum teaching assignments, secondary school
(2) Every board shall ensure that, in the aggregate, its classroom teachers in secondary schools are assigned to provide instruction to pupils in an average of at least 1,250 minutes per week (during the instructional program) for each period of five instructional days during the school year.
Commencement
2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3. The short title of this Act is the Students First Act, 2000.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
The purpose of the Bill is to set out the minimum weekly teaching workload in secondary schools as 1,250 minutes to allow flexibility in allocating workload and instructional time.
