The Speaker's Chair
The Speaker's chair sits on a dais at the south end of the Legislative Chamber. Until the 1940s when the gift of a portrait was introduced, each Speaker was able to take his chair home at the end of his term. The Speaker’s chair in use today dates from 1874 and once belonged to former Speaker Rupert Wells. It was returned to the Legislature by his family.
Upon entering and leaving the Legislative Chamber, MPPs bow towards the Speaker’s chair.
