An Act to amend the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
1. The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act is amended by adding the following section:
Choice of veterinarian
14.1 Where a veterinarian is permitted or required to do anything under sections 11.4 to 14, the owner or custodian of the animal shall select the veterinarian or approve the choice of veterinarian.
Commencement
2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3. The short title of this Act is the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Amendment Act (Choice of Veterinarian), 2013.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill amends the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Sections 11.4 to 14 of the Act currently permit veterinarians to perform various functions, such as accompanying inspectors or agents of the Society during inspections, providing treatment and care to an animal and providing advice about the removal and destruction of an animal. New section 14.1 of the Act allows animal owners and custodians to select the veterinarian or approve the choice of veterinarian.
