An Act to improve the part of the TransCanada Highway that is known as Highway 17
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
Purposes
1. (1) The purposes of this section are regional economic enhancement and the promotion of public safety.
Duty to improve Highway 17
(2) The Minister of Transportation and the Minister of Infrastructure shall work together with the federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities to ensure that improvements are made to the part of the TransCanada Highway that is known as Highway 17.
Improvements
(3) The improvements referred to in subsection (2) should include,
(a) additional passing lanes;
(b) paved shoulders;
(c) rumble strips;
(d) rest stops; and
(e) an increase to four lanes, including two lanes in each direction.
Implementation
(4) Subject to subsection (5), work on the improvements must commence as soon as possible after the day this Act comes into force and must be completed within 20 years after the day this Act comes into force.
Cost-sharing agreement
(5) Before making improvements under subsection (2), the Province of Ontario shall enter into discussions with the Government of Canada for the purpose of reaching an agreement relating to the sharing of the costs of the improvements.
Commencement
2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3. The short title of this Act is the TransCanada Highway Improvement Act (Highway 17), 2011.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill enacts the TransCanada Highway Improvement Act (Highway 17), 2011. The Act requires the Minister of Transportation and the Minister of Infrastructure to work together with the federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities to make improvements to the part of the TransCanada Highway that is known as Highway 17.
