An Act to amend the Highway Traffic Act with respect to requirements for drivers' licences for school buses
Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:
1. Section 32 of the Highway Traffic Act, as amended by the Statutes of Ontario, 1993, chapter 40, section 2, 1996, chapter 20, section 3 and 2002, chapter 18, Schedule P, section 12, is amended by adding the following subsections:
School bus drivers' licences
(15.1) In addition to the requirements of the regulations, a person is not eligible to be issued a driver's licence for a school purposes bus as defined in subsection 1 (1) of Ontario Regulation 340/94 on or after this subsection comes into force unless the person has demonstrated, to the satisfaction of the Minister, the person's ability to perform cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
Transition
(15.2) A person is not ineligible to hold a driver's licence described in subsection (15.1) that was issued before that subsection came into force simply because the person has not completed the demonstration described in that subsection.
Commencement
2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.
Short title
3. The short title of this Act is the Highway Traffic Amendment Act (School Bus Drivers' Licences), 2004.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Bill amends the Highway Traffic Act to require that applicants for drivers' licences for school buses issued after the amendment comes into force complete a practical examination on cardiac pulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
