Bill 37 2003

An Act to establish
the Ontario Workers'
Memorial

Preamble

Ontario's workers are the lifeblood of this province's economy. Their talents and skills have made Ontario the most important economy in this country, thus contributing to Canada's becoming one of the best performing economies in the world. Our day-to-day lives are touched by Ontario's workers, whether it be by the cars we drive, the food we consume, the buildings that house us or the streets and roads that pave our province's way to success. Unfortunately, many of this province's workers have been lost to accidents while on the job. Ontario has become strong based largely on their efforts and therefore we should recognize those whose lives were lost in making this province great. The Legislative Assembly believes that it would be appropriate to establish a memorial to honour those workers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Ontario Workers' Memorial

1. A memorial shall be established in or adjacent to the legislative precinct of the Legislative Assembly to honour the memory of workers who have died on the job.

Role of Board of Internal Economy

2. (1) The Board of Internal Economy of the Legislative Assembly shall take such actions as it considers appropriate to establish and provide for the maintenance of the workers' memorial, including consulting with experts in the design of memorials.

Delegation of functions

(2) The Board may delegate the function referred to in subsection (1) to a committee of the Legislative Assembly made up of such members of the Assembly as the Board may decide.

Report

3. (1) The Board or the committee shall report back to the Legislative Assembly within six months of the coming into force of this Act or, if the Assembly is not in session, at the first opportunity after the end of that period.

Contents

(2) The report shall recommend a site for the memorial, make design recommendations and contain an estimate of the costs, and may make such other recommendations as the Board or the committee considers appropriate.

Commencement

4. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

5. The short title of this Act is the Ontario Workers' Memorial Act, 2003.
