Short title

3.The short title of this Act is the City of Toronto Act (Tenant Protection), 2000.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

Currently, section 136 of the Tenant Protection Act, 1997 applies when the municipal property tax for a residential complex is reduced. It specifies that the lawful rent for rental units in the complex must be reduced if the municipal property tax for the complex is reduced by a percentage greater than the percentage prescribed under that Act.

The Bill authorizes the City of Toronto to pass a by-law specifying a different percentage for the purposes of that section of the Tenant Protection Act, 1997. As a transitional matter, the by-law may also specify a different deadline for 2000 for the city to give notice to landlords and tenants about any required rent reduction.
