This year, the Office of the Assembly (OA) turns 50. To help mark this milestone, we’re sharing a series of articles to provide a glimpse inside OA offices and divisions. The next in our series looks at the Legislative Services Division.

The Legislative Services Division was established in 1972 to support the Legislature. Today, the division has four branches that each report to the Deputy Clerk.

The Broadcast and Recording Service ensures legislative proceedings are available on television, our website’s video page, and the Parlance app. The branch also records audio to help House Publications and Language Services with transcription.

House Publications and Language Services prepares and indexes Hansard, the official transcript of House and committee meetings. The branch also translates materials and provides simultaneous interpretation (in English and French). If an MPP has arranged with the Clerk to speak in an Indigenous language spoken in Canada, it will be interpreted in English and French.

Parliamentary Protocol and Public Relations provides a wide range of bilingual services including:

Procedural Services Branch provides procedural and administrative advice and support for the operation of the House and committees. The branch produces the Orders and Notices Paper, Votes and Proceedings, and other House documents. They also administer proceedings of all standing and select committees and offer procedural research and analysis.

The division’s services are essential to the proceedings of the House and committees.
