New Clerk of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario appointed
Toronto, June 1, 2023—The Legislative Assembly of Ontario has appointed Trevor Day as its next Clerk, effective July 1, 2023. Mr. Day will serve as Ontario’s 9th permanent Clerk, following the retirement of Todd Decker at the end of June after a near 40-year career at the Assembly.
Mr. Day was appointed by Order of the Legislative Assembly after being unanimously selected and recommended by a panel of MPPs from each recognized party, comprised of the Honourable Paul Calandra (Markham-Stouffville) and John Vanthof (Timiskaming-Cochrane) and chaired by Assembly Speaker Ted Arnott.
The Clerk is the chief permanent officer of the Legislative Assembly, with the rank and status of a Deputy Minister. As the principal procedural adviser and senior officer of the House, the Clerk's responsibilities include advising the Speaker and members of the Legislature on questions of procedure and interpretation of the rules and practices of the House. The Clerk is also responsible for the overall direction and administration of the Legislative Assembly and is Secretary of the Board of Internal Economy.
With over 25 years of experience at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Trevor Day began his career in the Supply and Services Branch before becoming an assistant to a former Sergeant-at-Arms. He quickly moved to the Committee Services Branch (now Procedural Services) where he worked in various roles including as a Committee Clerk, and later as the Senior Clerk of Committees. Mr. Day has been the Deputy Clerk and Executive Director of Legislative Services since 2017.
“Members of this Legislature have confirmed that Mr. Day’s experience, especially providing procedural advice in the Chamber, made him an exceptional choice as the Ontario Legislature’s next Clerk,” said Speaker Arnott. “We congratulate him and look forward to all that he will bring to his new role.” Speaker Arnott went on to say: “I would also like to thank Mr. Todd Decker for his outstanding service to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, especially in his role as Ontario’s 8th permanent Clerk. On behalf of the Members of Provincial Parliament, his colleagues, and all Assembly staff, we wish him well in his retirement.”
