Bill 12, An Act to amend the Vital Statistics Act in relation to adoption information and to make consequential amendments to the Child and Family Services Act. Hon. Mrs. Meilleur.

Orders of the Day

Mr. McGuinty moved,

M. McGuinty propose,

That the Legislative Assembly of Ontario recognizes that despite the Federal Government's efforts to improve the representation of growing provinces in the House of Commons, the proposed formula is unfair to Ontario and calls on the Federal Government to amend Bill C-22 to provide Ontarians with their fair share of seats in the House of Commons while maintaining the constitutionally protected seat guarantees of smaller provinces.


A debate arose and, after some time,

Mr. Sterling moved that the motion be amended by adding the following:-

M. Sterling propose que la motion soit amendée en ajoutant le suivant:-

"and that, in the opinion of this Legislature, the Government of Ontario must demonstrate its belief in the principle of representation by population by addressing the inequity in representation at the provincial level, by guaranteeing 11 MPP's in Northern Ontario and creating an independent Electoral Boundaries Commission to ensure Ontarians receive equal and effective representation in their provincial Legislature."

The debate continued and after some time, in accordance with the Order of the House passed earlier today, the Deputy Speaker put the question forthwith on Mr. Sterling's amendment to the motion, and it was declared lost.

The main motion, having then been put, was declared carried.

And it was resolved,
