Bill 71 2004

An Act to proclaim
Olympic Day

Preamble

Since 1907 the Canadian Olympic Committee has worked to promote not just Olympians but also the Olympic spirit. While it is expected that each Olympian will demonstrate their athletic prowess, the athletes represent other equally important values. These values are universal in nature and should serve as a model by which we all live.

Ontarians believe in the promotion and support of the pursuit of excellence, innovation and success. We recognize Olympism and its values as an agent of social and cultural change that is positive and real.

The values of the Canadian Olympic Committee are:

Excellence

The right of all people to pursue their personal level of excellence.

Fun

The path to greatness should not be seen as competitive, nor as a chore, but rather as an enjoyable endeavour that we undertake for ourselves and with others.

Fairness

As characterized by equality, integrity and trust.

Human Development

The belief in a holistic approach to development: physical, social, cultural, spiritual and mental.

Leadership

That we each strive to push ourselves and, in so doing, inspire others.

Peace

Through our actions and by working together, we make others aware of what we represent and increase our understanding of ourselves. In so doing, we become agents of peace and change.

Respect

Open, free communication and respect for the views, role and contribution of all.

By adhering to these values, we will achieve our greatest passion: greatness.

Greatness is the ability to overcome barriers that seem unending. It is to conquer mountains that seem insurmountable. To rise above one's fears and triumph over pain. It is to push ourselves and, in so doing, inspire others. For us to achieve greatness, we must do great things, take great strides and change the world, starting with ourselves. Like an Olympian, we each represent our race, culture and country and should strive to be agents of peace and change.

Through our actions and by working together, we make others aware and understanding of what we represent and of ourselves. This is greatness.

It is appropriate then to recognize the fourth Tuesday of September as Olympic Day: a day to celebrate Olympism and the seven values of the COC.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Olympic Day

1.  The fourth Tuesday in September in each year is proclaimed as Olympic Day.

Commencement

2.  This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3.  The short title of this Act is the Olympic Day Act, 2004.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill proclaims the fourth Tuesday in September in each year to be Olympic Day.
