This year, the Office of the Assembly (OA) turns 50. To help mark this milestone, we’re sharing a series of articles to provide glimpses inside OA offices and divisions. The second in our series looks at the Information and Technology Services Division.

The Information and Technology Services Division was created in 2009, combining the Legislative Information Systems, Legislative Library, Legislative Research, and Information Management Office into one group. This division supports the technology needs of the Assembly, provides reference and research support, and manages heritage and documentation.

Today, the division consists of:

  • the Executive Director's Office
  • the Portfolio Management Office
  • Information Services
  • Legislative Library
  • Legislative Research Services
  • Technology Services

The Portfolio Management Office helps Assembly branches define requirements for information and technology needs and assists in navigating the process of an idea to a project.

Information Services works with creators and users of Assembly information to ensure data is properly managed, published, preserved, findable, and accessible to MPPs, staff, and the public through its websites and custom applications.

The Legislative Library has existed since 1791 but became the responsibility of the Speaker and the OA in 1976. Library staff provide a full range of library and information services to MPPs and staff. You can learn more about the history of the library in episode 19 of the ON Parliament podcast.

Legislative Research was established in 1980 and provides in-depth research and analysis on topics and supports legislative committees.

Technology Services is responsible for developing, maintaining, and securing the Assembly's technology infrastructure.

These groups work together as one division to meet the information and technology needs of the Legislative Assembly.
