Toronto, December 6, 2023—Today, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario confirmed Shelley Spence as the province’s next Auditor General, effective January 8, 2024. Ms. Spence will replace Nick Stavropoulos, who assumed the role of Acting Auditor General following the end of Bonnie Lysyk’s term in office in September.

Ms. Spence was appointed for a ten-year term by Order of the Legislative Assembly after being unanimously recommended by a panel of MPPs chaired by Speaker Ted Arnott and composed of MPP Stephen Crawford (PC) and MPP France Gélinas (NDP).

“We are honoured to have someone of Ms. Spence’s calibre in the role of Auditor General,” stated Speaker Arnott. “The Auditor General plays a vital role in maintaining financial transparency and ensuring that everyone benefits from Ontario’s public programs and services. I want to wish her well as she undertakes her new responsibilities.”

The Office of the Auditor General has existed since the late 1800s. As an independent officer of the Legislature, they report to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario on matters related to the fiscal responsibility of public-sector organizations. They hold these entities accountable through the tabling of non-partisan audit reports.

Shelley Spence

Ms. Spence is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant and Licensed Public Accountant with over 30 years of experience. She began her career as an auditor at KPMG and later owned her own auditing firm. She was most recently a partner at Deloitte LLP in the Audit and Assurance practise, serving clients in the Government and Public Sector. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in accounting from the University of Alberta.
